Research was always an important part of society in Slovenia. First scientific organisation (Academia Operosorumm Labacensium) was founded in 1693 in Ljubljana. Over the intervening years Slovenian scientists made some important scientific contributions:

The importance of research is also reflected in gross domestic expenditure on research and development (GERD) that was 2,59% of GDP in 2013 (Source Slovenian Research Agency).
