Sport in Slovenia

SEARCH PROGRAMMES & INSTITUTIONS

Slovenes are very fond of recreational sports, and certain surveys show that no less than forty per cent of Slovenes practise a sport in one way or another. They are well catered for, as there are many recreational sporting events held throughout the year across the country.

Slovenia’s diverse geography allows for numerous sporting activities. All outdoor activities are very popular. Increasingly, people want to stay fit, and out of all outdoor activities, walking, cycling, jogging and other sports practiced by health-conscious people are very popular. Every Slovenian town has its ‘home summit’, which is usually a small mountain popular with the locals.

There is a great variety of mountaineering options. The mountain hiking trails are well-tended and marked. No wonder that Slovenia’s highest mountain, Mount Triglav (2,864 meters or 9,396 feet), became a symbol of Slovenia.

Slovenia has achieved disproportionate Olympic success relative to its size, with nineteen medals at six (4 gold, 6 silver and 9 bronze) Summer Olympics and fifteen medals at seven (2 gold, 4 silver and 9 bronze) Winter Olympics. It is also known for its athletes, such as ultramarathon swimmer Martin Strel and Davo Karničar, the only person to ski down Mount Everest.
