Obtaining residence and work permits for researchers and students

SEARCH PROGRAMMES & INSTITUTIONS

In order to facilitate and speed up the procedures for obtaining residence and work permits for both researchers and students, a meeting and discussion of stakeholders in these procedures took place in Ljubljana on August 30, 2024.

Over 100 participants from universities, administrative units, the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation spoke frankly about the challenges, the measures already taken and possible solutions for the future.

The number of international students and researchers is steadily increasing, in line with the strategic objectives of the field, but requires adjustments by authorities and institutions. Although major innovations in the area of digitisation of processes are not yet expected. However, it is good news that the three new Slovenian embassies in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Algiers (Algeria) and Manila (Philippines) will be fully operational at the start of the new year. Information exchange, enhanced cooperation with administrative units, updates to the national EURAXESS and Study in Slovenia portals and a number of university support activities are improving the situation. Future networking and the search for innovative solutions are also foreseen in order to ensure an even more friendly welcome for foreign students and researchers in Slovenia.
