With its official registration in the Court Register on 1 July 2026, the Public University of Novo Mesto has formally commenced its operations, marking a significant milestone for higher education in southeastern Slovenia. The establishment of the new public university opens an important new chapter in the development of higher education, research, innovation, and collaboration with industry and the local community.
An important step in the establishment of the University was the first meeting of the Interim Senate, held on 3 July 2026. During the session, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nevenka Kregar Velikonja was elected Chair of the Interim Senate, five members of the Governing Board were elected, and the University’s Statute—the fundamental legal document governing the institution—was adopted. These decisions laid the legal and organisational foundations for the successful operation of the Public University of Novo Mesto.
The Acting Rector, Prof. Dr. Janez Povh, emphasized that the establishment of the Public University of Novo Mesto is the result of many years of dedicated work, professional commitment, and close cooperation among numerous individuals and institutions. The University was created through the integration of higher education institutions in Novo Mesto and represents one of the most significant organisational achievements in Slovenian higher education in recent years.
In the coming weeks, University will continue with a number of key activities, including transfer of employees from the participating private higher education institutions, establishment of new faculties, creation of the Rectorate, conclusion of funding agreements with the competent ministry, development of new research programmes, and strategic planning of future study programmes.
With these activities, the Public University of Novo Mesto enters the next operational phase of its development, focused on long-term stability, academic excellence, internationalisation, and a strong contribution to the advancement of higher education and research in Slovenia.
On this important occasion, we extend our sincere congratulations to the leadership, academic staff, administrative employees, students, and everyone whose vision, dedication, and perseverance made the establishment of the Public University of Novo Mesto possible.
