Research was always an important part of society in Slovenia. First scientific organisation (Academia Operosorumm Labacensium) was founded in 1693 in Ljubljana. Over the intervening years Slovenian scientists made some important scientific contributions:
Current research in Slovenia includes 914 organisations and 14.241 researchers working on different projects (Source SICRIS). The importance of research is also reflected in gross domestic expenditure on research and development (GERD) that was 2.04% of GDP in 2019 (Source Slovenian Research Agency).
