Research Opportunities

Research was always an important part of society in Slovenia. First scientific organisation (Academia Operosorumm Labacensium) was founded in 1693 in Ljubljana. Over the intervening years Slovenian scientists made some important scientific contributions:

• Mathematician Jurij Vega (1754-1802) authored the logarithm tables, a tool widely used before electronic calculators era.
• physicist and mathematician Jožef Stefan (1835-1893) discovered the law of light radiation, which is now called Stefan’s Law.
• Slovenian rocket engineer and army officer Herman Potočnik-Noordung published in 1929 a book entitled Das Problem der Befahrung des Weltraums (The Problem of Space Travel – a book that was a foundation of space flight and habitation ever since.
• The only Slovenian researcher awarded Nobel prize so far was a chemist Friderik Pregl who received this award for his work on improvement of existing methods of quantitative organic microanalysis (Nobel prize for chemistry, 1923).

Current research in Slovenia includes 914 organisations and 14.241 researchers working on different projects (Source SICRIS). The importance of research is also reflected in gross domestic expenditure on research and development (GERD) that was 2.04% of GDP in 2019 (Source Slovenian Research Agency).
